Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee or Blue Mountain Coffee is one of the most sought after, and so, the most expensive coffees in the world. Famous for its exquisite mild nutty flavors, excellent body and bold aromas, subtle spices and tempered acidity. This is a coffee connoisseurs prize.
This extraordinary coffee is grown in the majestic Blue Mountain range in Jamaica, with coffee growing at levels of 3,000 feet or higher. An incredible mix of rich soil, cool and misty conditions, high rainfall and good soil drainage make this a perfect place to produce some of the most character-rich coffee beans in the world.
These unique conditions slow the maturation process of the pea berries, taking up to ten months from bloom to harvest; almost double the time taken in other coffee producing regions. This slow process also concentrates the flavor, aging the bean, like aging fine wine or aged smooth scotch. This is the process that gives this coffee it’s rich and inviting character.
The best known old estates that produce Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee are Wallenford and Mavis Bank. After some deregulation in the 80’s other estates, such as Old Tavern have commenced production. While Old Tavern, has produced wonderful crops, some of the newer ‘farms’ may not hold to the qualities the more established labels produce.
A few other points that should be made:
- Jamaican High Mountain coffee is sometimes confused with Blue. These are different coffees, and you will notice it when you try them.
- Blue Mountain Blends must be considered carefully. Some blends are minimal Blue Mountain, with a lot more ‘blend’. Just remember, you get what you pay for! This is doubly important when considering a Blue Mountain Blend Coffee.
